The Film has run out at the Sunset..

Now showing: Digital Projection!

Digital projection has brought a crisp clear picture and 7.1 Dolby Digital sound to the Sunset Theatre. Installation included a new projector, new silver screen and new sound system components, including a Dolby 7.1 Processor and new amplifiers. The original 1952 Altec Lansing screen speakers are still being used, and they sound great! Installation began Monday April 30th 2012 and was completed on Friday May 4th.

For over 100 years movies have been shown in theatres on 35mm Film. Over the past few years theatres all over the world have been pulling out their film projectors and installing digital projectors because film will no longer be available past 2013. With digital projection movies are delivered to theatres on small portable hard drives instead of film reels.

The quality of picture and sound that accompany the digital upgrade is absolutely stunning. You will see bright, crisp, clear, and consistently perfect high definition picture and sound from the start. Consider this: a single full-length feature film delivered to a theatre using digital projection, has the equivalent size of 12 full Blu-ray discs. The days of film scratches, flickering, splices and inconsistent sound are gone. Until now we've been at the mercy of the handling abilities of the theatre that had the film before us. Sometimes we have had to play film that was not in very good shape. A few times we have had to try to find a replacement print because the quality was so bad. Digital movies are in perfect condition from the first showing to the last since there is no film or handling involved.

This was the biggest upgrade to the Sunset Theatre ever, by far. Come and check it out!

In 1993 a new 4 channel sound system was installed to replace the 1952 system that finally failed during the final moments of "Sleepless in Seattle."

In 1996 most of the bare walls in the auditorium were covered with fabric over fiberglass batting. This greatly improved the acoustic properties of the room. The directional sound system installed earlier became much more effective.

In June 1999 we installed new reverse scan sound readers in our projectors which made a big improvement in the sound quality in the theatre. The projector heads and lamps were also tuned up which made a better picture.

Before                                                                                After

The concession counter project was completed just in time for the anniversary celebration in 2002. The lobby & auditorium got new carpet, and all 370 seat backs were repainted. The new side drapes skillfully crafted by Jeri were installed, and the screen curtain was once again made operational. The bare floor areas in the auditorium were painted and the stage floor refinished along with various other painting projects. Even the "Sunset Swirls" got a new paint job. A very large subwoofer was added behind the screen, powered by a new 1300 watt amplifier. 12 additional surround speakers were also added. What an improvement!

January 2008 brought new lenses and a new bulb for a brighter, clearer, flicker-free picture. Sound system improvements were also made.

In May 2012 we made the biggest upgrade to the theatre ever: A brand new silver screen, Dolby 7.1 Sound, and Digital Projection including RealD 3D. Whoa!

On March 28, 2013 hardware and software upgrades were made to the projector to make it ready for high frame rate movies.

In February 2016 a new single ply membrane roof was put on the theatre.

After 60 years with no cupholders (how did we survive?) the center section of seats was replaced in September 2016 with 86 rockers and 16 powered recliners.
